Commission on the Status of Women (CSW)

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is a functional commission of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality, women’s rights and the empowerment of women. CSW plays a lead role in the monitoring and review of implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action.

With Agenda 2030, there is an opportunity to bolster the achievement of the BPfA. At the same time, the WMG is clear that the full BPfA should not be subsumed or diminished by Agenda 2030.

During the annual CSW in New York, the Women’s Major Group typically holds open meetings and strategy meetings of the WMG, as well as hosts outreach and content-oriented side events related to the core work of the WMG and its links to the CSW theme. Recent themes have related to sustainable development: Women’s empowerment and its link to sustainable development (2016); Challenges and achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals for women and girls (2015); and The empowerment of rural women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication, development and current challenges (2012).
