WMG joined over 1000 civil society organizations in a letter addressed to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, on the selection of the next UN Women Executive Director.

At the outset of the selection process of the next Executive Director of this vital UN agency, there should be a clear and transparent process put in place to ensure that all civil society, all Member States and other stakeholders are meaningfully engaged in the selection process. This would include the creation, in direct collaboration with civil society, of the terms of reference (ToR) for the position, and then advertising the ToR widely, not only through official UN channels, but also through civil society mechanisms. A clear timeline for the process should be established in consultation with civil society, including explicit moments and mechanisms to update civil society and the broader public on the progress of the selection process. Additionally, all candidates should publicly submit mission statements around their interest in taking on the position.
