Africa

At the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit on 25 September 2015, more than 150 world leaders including African leaders adopted the new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Africa is committed to the SDGs, the Council of the African Heads of States and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSSOC) and the Paris Agreement and the signing ceremony of the Climate agreement in April 2016 and so many other regional developmental frameworks in which Africa leaders has committed to are clear indications of the continents willingness to implement them.

However, as much as these agreements are global, their implementation must be seen to be at local, national and regional and their impact must be realized and felt locally before being registered as global impact and if the principles of leaving no behind must be adhered to.

The African Women have a critical role to play in all of the frameworks Africa has committed itself and if no one must be left behind including the SDGs, Climate Change Agreement, Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development, with many specifically recognizing women’s equality and empowerment as both the objective, and as part of the solution.

African women will partner with the pan African Institutions (AUC, African Development Bank and the UN agencies) Regional Commissions, national and provincial governments, women major groups, feminist organizations, networks and other stakeholders and Member States across the continent and globally in designing, implementation and monitoring in the actualization of these frameworks.

The WMG OP focal point for Africa is the Women Environmental Programme.
