The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) is the main governing body of UNEP mandated to set the global environmental agenda as well as to provide overarching policy guidance and define policy responses to address emerging environmental challenges, among others. The Global Symposium on Environmental Rule of Law during the first ever meeting of the UNEA on 24 June 2014 at UNEP’s Headquarters is organized by UNEP in collaboration with the Africa Sustainability Centre (ASCENT), the Organization of American States (OAS), the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law and other partners. It will be a unique opportunity to highlight, in the context of the UNEA and beyond, the importance of environmental rule of law and the right to a healthy environment for social and environmental sustainability, particularly in view of the formation of a global post-2015 development agenda.
